Description

Something new, yay! Slightly more gloomy this time. I was reading the Riddle of the Sands and while this painting does not depict any specific scene from the book, it is certainly inspired by the mood that the story put me into. Hope you guys like it!

Prints will be up soon, as usual. Also feel free to give it a like on facebook and to follow me there, as I might share some stuff from my sketchbook soon! --> www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi…

Much love

Merry CRITmas! If you don't know what that is, check this out:

Normally I don't pick nits like this but since you were looking for critiques, I thought I'd share this with you anyway - but first, a round of praise!

Others have said this but I'd like to mention again that I appreciate those colours you managed to incorporate in, well, a rather fetching depiction of a grey day. I'm also a huge fan of old houses and I so love the subtle details in the architecture: the chimney, the different sizes of panes in the windows...

I think you did wonderfully bringing some subtle lights and deep darks in the front house, it really adds that variation I like to see in foregrounds... but something's lacking, it seems, on the far left of the canvas. It's quite a lot of nothing to warrant being such a large part of the picture. The composition seems to be a bit off-balance because of it, and my first instinct would be to see it cropped, but on the other hand, I think an added element could maybe help lead the eye from the left to the right. Or perhaps that's where the spine of the book is? Inquiring minds need to know.

In summary: wonderful work, but the leftmost part is a thorn in my side a bit.

Cheers, and thank you for putting up with me!
