After the previous journal entry had graced my dA profile for like a year and a half, I figured it's about time for a new one. Hopefully though my recent submissions have proved that I am indeed alive. And I can tell you that it feels good to finally have some new pieces up. Since June last year I have been working as a full time concept artist, and that left me pretty much no time for personal stuff. But I am having a great time at the job and I have learned so much and have in fact painted more than ever before. Lately I just got too fed up with having only my rather old pieces up, hence why I made the time for new ones. And I'm definitely happy that you guys are enjoying them, that's great encouragement. There are a good many more pieces in the pipeline, but I don't know yet when I will find the time to finish them.

The next couple of weeks will be rather chaotic for me and I will probably not be online much, so please don't take offense if I am not replying immediately. I will still read every comment. But life sure isn't boring these days.

Hope all of you are doing well!

So I thought it's time for a new journal! Not that I have a whole lot of meaningful stuff to say, but I thought I'd let you know that I'm still alive, haha! I have been fairly busy with uni assignments lately, lots of annoying writing and attempting to reach minimum word counts, it really is quite dull. And I am working on a commission as well. But I cannot really complain too much, I am doing well :D

And while I may not have had the time to really do a painting, I've been actively filling pages of my sketchbook with little thumbnail sketches, playing around with different ideas for sceneries and perspectives more, which is heaps of fun. Most sketches are not more than four inches wide (about ten cm), some even less, and they don't take too long :D And all done with pencils or pen, but it's ideal to stay rough. I can only recommend anyone to do that!
When I have some more time again, I will probably plough through the thumbnails and pick some which I will paint!

Also I've been meaning to do that for a while now, I wanted to plug Sangiev's King of Land contest here! It will go through several rounds, and the good entries of each round advance to the next. There seems to be a fair amount of prizes waiting at the end, too, so have a look :D

Contest: news.deviantart.com/article/72…

The deadline has been extended to April 20th, so there's plenty of time for you guys to join in

Now back to assignments :salute: How is life treating all of you? :#1:

Love you all,
Dancakes

So as some of you may have noticed, I have started to upload a bunch of speedpaintings and sketches to my scraps. mynti persuaded me to show them :giggle: That way I can show you what I do to practise, especially things like seeing colour, values and shapes, and also the important bit about not getting carried away with details, haha.
Hand in hand with that I have cleaned out my gallery and moved some old pieces to scraps, as well. More will probably follow in due time. So the gallery got categories now and probably looks tidier :D

That have been quite a few pieces at once now to kick things off. In the future it will most likely go a little slower, but I do plan an continueing to upload sketches and some speedpaintings to scraps. So if you don't want to look at all that, feel free to unwatch my scraps :giggle:

Here are some of the newly submitted pieces:

In any case, I am sorry that I haven't submitted anything major in a long while. I've had some rather annoying computer issues...the monitor burned through a good while ago, so I had to use my macbook for a good while, which isn't exactly suitable for painting. In December classes started again and I was busy with a commission, and now in January I had to find an apartment in Berlin and work on some assignments.
Tomorrow I will move into my new place and on monday it's back to classes. I will try to get internet as soon as I can, and then I think the investment in a completely new computer is due. So when that's resolved, you can expect new paintings from me. I have some stuff that I've been meaning to finish for a long time :D

How's everybody doing? :#1:

Phew, it's about time, isn't it?

I know it's been ages since my last journal, and since my last submission too. For the journal I am making up now, new art will hopefully follow by the end of next week. I have two pieces which are almost done, I really just need some hours to finish both off. One of them being a female nude, the other being a matte painting.

So what has happened...since my last journal, I was lucky to see my art be selected for Ballistic Publishing's Exposé 6 and d'artiste Digital Painting 2. The chosen pieces were "Remnants of the Past" and "Day subsiding".
Also I have been really busy with uni, I spent a lot of time working on my final project, and then stopped pretty much everything to work on my thesis. Well, today I got it printed and handed it in, so finally this is over :giggle:
I did many sketches and drawings meanwhile, though. Usually when I was sitting in a café and typing my thesis. Drawing can be a wonderful break to keep the stress away.

As many of you probably know, the Games Convention is in Leipzig these days. I am holding a short Matte Painting workshop there every day. Today was the first time, and it went pretty well, I think. So if anyone of you is visiting the GC, drop by in hall 2, booth L 41, I will be there at least around noon every day. Would be cool to meet some of you folks!

And now I think it is time for sleep. After only two hours of sleep last night, I hope to sleep deep and sound! :aww:

How's everyone doing?
Love you all,
Dancakes

Hey lovelies,

no, I am not dead, I just have not been submitting anything in a good while :slow: Doesn't mean that I'm lazy, I was just kept busy with school, a commission and stuff. Oh and of course there were relatives around for Christmas, who I wanted to spend some time with.
I have been painting, though, doing small sketches, concepts, pencil drawings ...and currently I am working on something that started out as a matte painting exercise, as so often, but....is kinda going further now. We will see, if I deem the final result good enough, I might even submit it!
I really have no lack of ideas these days, stuff just kind of pops into my silly mind sometimes, but sadly, I was equipped with two hands only :paranoid:
Anyway, just thought I'd let you people know that I am still there, haha.

However, uni is starting again next week, and so are french classes and nude drawing. I will have to work on a couple of assignments and also shoot a music video, so... I expect that I will have to cut short on painting time again.

But enough babbling from my side. How's everyone doing? What are your wishes for the coming year, what are your plans?

Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and wonderful holidays. Have a Happy New Year,  my friends

Love you all,
Dancakes

The Hide-out by memod

Hey everybody,

it's about time for a new journal again. First of all, thanks for all the kind birthday wishes, it was really lovely to read them all. I had a nice day, the weather was superb, we had family and relatives over (and still do, actually), and I just had a nice time in general.

There are some good news in other regards, too. A few of my paintings are shown on the DVD that comes with the issue 22 of the imagineFX magazine, it should be in stores at the moment.
And also, this week I got an email saying that my matte painting When the earth breaks open will be included in the upcoming d'artiste Matte Painting 2 book by Ballistic Publishing. This came as a real surprise, as the deadline for the entries has been already over two month ago, and I hadn't received an email since then. But I can tell you, I am reaaaally happy about that :D

Sadly though, lately I had almost no time to paint, uni is getting busier once again, with a number of projects running at the same time, and me volunteering for even more :slow:

-

And now to something different - my critique project. I introduced pretty much every of my critique rounds with an excuse for being too late because I have been busy...and I think I should really draw the consequences from that. I am still very busy, and so are the other members of the critique group, so that's why I decided to put the project on ice for a while now. The last round also got only seven links from people who wanted a critique, and that added to that decision, too.
That does not mean that I won't pick that up again, especially as so far the response to my critiques has been pretty good and I am glad if I was helping people.
Also, I have an idea for another critique project somewhere in the back of my head, let's see if I will substantiate that idea and find the time to do it

Anyway, I did not want to just cut short on the people who submitted for the last round, so here are my five critiques.

A Mess Of Blues. by Vloth by Vloth - the critique

Over the sea by mivva by mivva - the critique

Sunflower Faery by mistycat85 by mistycat85 - the critique

Drawing for Gaming Club by Maarten-Michiel by Maarten-Michiel - the critique

Memories of Summers Past by Zaichick by Zaichick - the critique

I hope they were useful and helpful, and I also do hope that it won't be too long until I can pick up that project again - if you guys are interested, of course!

I hope you all have a great weekend, tell me what's going on in your lifes :#1:
Love you all,
Daniel

Hello everyone,

it's the time of the month again: Themed Art Challenges time. By now most of you probably know how they go, but for those of you who are new to them, have a look at this journal to find out about the general procedure.
However, this time there is a difference: We are making two rounds, each two hours long. By doing that we want to give a chance to 3d artists as well, because their genre naturally takes a little longer. Of course, all ye painters, manipulators, designers and any other digital artist can still participate! :ahoy:

Oh and....another difference. This time we're giving out 3 month subscriptions.

So make sure you all come. It's a good challenge and a ton of fun.
#DigitalMedia, 5 pm BST, 12 pm EST. Done readin'? Then spread the word :#1:

Hey people,

okay, round III is finally over. I know this has taken a lot longer than it should, I apologize for having been so slow on that, I have just been busy with other things. This will probably not be the last time that me or someone else in the group is really busy, so that it might be delayed or one of the members will pass for a round. Hope you bear with us though and continue to suggest your images

So here we go, here are the critiques of this round, I might add more, later.

At this place I not only want to ask you to check out the pieces and leave your thoughts as usual, but I also want to point out to you that IllustrativeJack felt inspired to do a similar critique project, too, so head over to her Journal and give her some pictures you want critiques, on
Dunfisch also decided to write a few critiques on the pictures I selected for the current round, so I will add his critiques to this journal when he sends them to me

I really enjoy that some people feel inspired to critique themselves, that's exactly what this project is about, and I'd be happy to see the number of people who do that go up. Don't forget, you not only help someone else, but with every critique that you write you also sharpen your own eye, which benefits you with your very own art, too. =)

And now it is time for round IV, please leave me your suggestions again, and don't forget to make sure that they adhere to the conditions which I have described in this journal.

Tomorrow starts the last of two weeks of holidays, then uni starts again, and with that the really busy times. A concept/script needs to be written, a 60 second clip to be cut/edited, possibly some material from a BMX battle, too, and then I will have to film a portrait about someone or something.
I might also soon have no internet for a while. My dad had the clever idea to cancel our internet without getting signed up to a new provider first, and then going off to vacation. I hope I can fix that tomorrow, but if they actually need a signature or something or it doesn't work for any other reasons, then don't expect me only for a while from August 1st on...except for when I'm at uni, perhaps. Fun times.

Last but not last, this thumb that I want to share with you, from an artist who truly deserves more recognition on here

Whew, if you have actually read until here you have earned yourself my undying love plus a cookie! Now if that's not something!
How are you guys doing?

Hey everybody :aww:

As some of you have noticed, deviantArt decided to declare me old and put that funny symbol in front of my name. I am very thankful for that, and I hope that I can live up to the expectations that all of you might have towards a senior

-

I am currently working on a new matte painting, a project which I have started a while ago and which really needs to be finished until sunday, so I am putting most of my tiem and efforts into that. Unfortunately this is causing a small delay with my critique project, the critiques may not be up until this or next Sunday. It is by no means stopped or anything, I just have this deadline to see to.

In general life is going fine, though, I cannot really complain. I have successfully finished the three short films that I had to do for uni, and since then everything is a bit more relaxed and I am actually at home sometime :slow:

-

Last but not least two thumbs that I want to share with you. The first one you might have seen in my last journal already, but I want to point it out in particular, because after my critique the deviant blufrazzle spent another twelve hours to work on it and fix what I had pointed out, and it really made my day to see that she took my critique to heart so much, and the result is now notably better  Go and have a look!

:thumb57613710: by blufrazzle

The other one I saw today while browsing and shows that creativity in space art isn't completely gone, and is technically well executed, too!

So....where's my cane, now? :shakefist:

Daniel

Again, I want to make clear that with the end of one round the next round starts immediately after it!. With other words, round III is open now, please send me your pieces for critique. Please be sure to read this journal first, to find out more about how the whole thing works.

It might be that most people did not fully read through my last journal, and thus haven't noticed it, but...
round II of my critique project has started, and you're encouraged to send in your pieces on which you want a critique! I am waiting for your suggestions!

Hey everyone!

In my journal two weeks ago I had announced the start of my own little critique project, the first round of which is now over.
I really want to thank everybody for their suggestions, I was quite overwhelmed by the sheer amount. I looked through all the links, and picked 5 images onto which I wrote a critique.
Sadly the other members of this group were extremely unlucky with their time and technical issues, mynti is even completely disconnected from the internet, and I don't know when she will be able to get back on it. So please bear with them if they have not been able to write you many critiques. If they get the chance to write more, I will update the journal and post them here.
Anyway, here is a list of the pieces that we have commented on so far, and the corresponding critiques:

Theory by SamODJ by SamODJ - memod's critique - mynti's critique

Self Portrait by larkin2 by larkin2 - memod's critique - gaelic's critique - mynti's critique

Climate of Thoughts by battlefield1010 by battlefield1010 - memod's critique - cosmosue's critique - gaelic's critique - mynti's critique

Lonely sailor by spini by spini - cosmosue's critique

Come with me II by MelGama by MelGama - cosmosue's critique

Wake up, darling. by enchanted-black-rose by enchanted-black-rose - cosmosue's critique

Please check out the pieces, and of course, comment on them and tell their creators what you think
I hope some of you feel inspired to write their own critique now. It does not have to be on one of the above pieces, critiques on any piece are fine. If I can do my little part to make more people on dA write critiques, then my mission has been successful

And now it is time for round II, please leave me your suggestions again, and don't forget to make sure that they adhere to the conditions which I have described in this journal.

And of course, don't forget to spread the word about this project :aww:

-

Life is being quite busy at the moment. In the next four weeks I will have to concept, shoot and edit three little films, I have lectures, workshops, nude drawing, a theoretical and a practical test, there is a small chance of getting a commission for three book covers (wish me luck everybody!), and I really want to finish some matte paintings which I want to send in for an artbook :paranoid:

Can you tell I'm busy? :slow:

Anyway, I am not complaining, life seems to go well right now, and I am having fun! :aww: I hope so does everyone of you lovely people :#1:

Two weeks ago mallaard wrote a journal about a really interesting idea for a comic project that he has, and even though I am no comic artist myself, I think the result of that might be quite enjoyable if enough people participate  So head over to his journal and have a look on what he is planning, I am sure he would welcome any contribution and interest

Hello everybody, friends, watchers, random people!

Lately my activity in regards of comments and critiques has slightly increased again, but it still is not as much as it used to be. That, and the fact that 2envision sadly seems to have died have lead me to the decision to start my own little critique project. mynti, cosmosue and gaelic have asked me to let them join in, too, so we all hope we can give back to you a little, and offer our honest critiques and opinions on your art.

So what are you to do? Starting with today I will make a journal asking for your art about every two weeks, in which you can suggest pieces from you that you would like to have a critique on. cosmosue, gaelic, mynti and me will choose five of the suggestions and write an in-depth critique on them throughout the next two weeks. Then I will make another journal, linking the pictures which we chose, and the critiques we wrote, and asking for the next suggestions.

However, I do want your suggestions to fulfill a couple of conditions, which I will name here:

1. Your suggestion should be a recent submission which represents your current skill level.

2. I want the picture to have a clear artistic merit, I do not want to see a doodle on lined paper, instead it should become clear that you took your time with it and put some thought into your picture.

3. I will not critique literature. That is simply a matter of me not being an native English speaker, and thus having trouble to fully understand some English literature. However, mynti told me that she would take those, so you will still get a critique if we choose you, just not from all of us.
I will be honest, fractal art does not really have much of a chance to be chosen by me either.

4. One picture per deviant in each round.

So that is really there is to it, doesn't sound very complicated, right? I am quite excited about this, as it will allow me to share what I have learned so far, and I hope you will help me with making this a success and spread the word about it, and, of course, participate!

Just make sure to please post all your suggestions in this journal, as I am not going to roam around half dA to look for them.
Thank you for reading, and now let's start the first two weeks, link me to a picture on which you need critiques!

I am having a couple of new paintings / matte paintings in the works. Like....four in total. So far. By the end of the week probably twice as much. I don't know why, but I keep jumping from picture to picture at the moment, and I have a good couple of ideas waiting in my sketchbook.
Anyway, I am working on a painting which I quite enjoy and that you will probably see soon. And I think it is not what you'd expect from me :giggle:

Sometime this week, though, I will have to finish (well, actually I have to start it first, before I can finish) an assignment for uni, too, so I don't know how much painting I will actually get done.

Enough of that, how are ya all?
And don't forget the TAC!

Heya my friends,

how's everybody of you doing? I hope you're having a great easter weekend! Or at least a great weekend, in case you don't celebreate easter :slow:
I am quite happy myself. Last friday I had a test about pretty much everything that we had in the first three months of uni, and I passed. Didn't score as high as I had aimed for, but I wasn't bad at all, I think :D

Today, after some difficulties in the beginning with a traffic jam and missing passports, we made a nice trip into a nearby mountain-ish area and climbed up some really tall rocks, and the view was quite amazing. And I just enjoyed the nature, air and the walk, it was really good. Bit cold perhaps, but great nonetheless. Aaaaand I have a couple of ideas for new pieces. I will try to sketch them down as soon as possible, and then I hope I will find some time to turn them into actual paintings. We'll see how that will go, now the actual film part at uni is starting, and I have new class times, too, but I'll try my best to net let you wait for the next piece for so long again.

Anyway, enough of myself, how was everybody's weekend? :aww:

As some of you may already know, there will soon be a new sub category of the Digital Art gallery, the "Mixed Media" category, which I have been asked to promote a bit, so here will come a short description of what goes in there.

1) This gallery is a home to those deviations that consist of two (or more) DIGITAL art forms (namely Paintings/Drawings/Airbrushing, Photomanipulation, 3-Dimensional, Fractals and Vectors/Vexels – from here on referred to as basic art forms) - mixes that include half digital half traditional art should not be put here, but in the gallery under digital or traditional that was worked with most (that also means that if you do something traditionally, scanit in and then use two or more of the basic art forms to an extend greater than the traditional part, it would indeed belong in mixed media, but only then).

2) Images run through one or more filters/plug-ins or that have had only minor things from a second art form added do not belong in the Mixed Media Gallery. The first ones belong in Misc and the second in their respective base categories.

I think this gallery will be pretty cool, because now I will have a place where I can put my matte paintings, without worrying that it does not quite fit into the gallery that I am putting it in. Because frankly, a matte painting would fall neither under painting nor manipulation, really.

So I hope that all of you who that may affect as well, will put your respective pieces in there, too :aww:

If you want to get more informations about this then please have a look at kuschelirmel's journal.

-

On another note, I have been a good bit less active than usual, lately, mainly because university is taking up a good amount of time now. However, I quite enjoy studying, and I have a cool class with many nice people. I also started to take nude drawing courses to work on my lack of skill in regards of figure drawing. Last week was my first class, and it was lots of fun, and I daresay that I did quite well.

I have been working on a new piece, too, which should be done soon, and I also have ideas for more pictures, on which I will work, as long as I find the time to.

Hope you all are having a great weekend!

Love you all,
Daniel

A while ago Norke and I had the idea that some time in the future we could create something like our own studio or at least group for matte paintings, since we both are quite interested in those. Well, the account madpainters has now been created, and even though there is nothing to see there yet, you should give it a devwatch, because we are going to post our first piece there quite soon.
artbytheo and mynti have also joined us, so I think you can definitely expect to see some nice work there.

Hope you all are having a great weekend!

Love you all,
Daniel

Hey my friends and watchers,

I'd like to wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a good start into the New Year, too. I hope you're all enjoying the festive season, the candles, the cookies, and if you have some, the snow. Because sadly, we don't :crying:

How are all you guys celebrating it? :aww: Are you doing it for religious reasons, or like me, just because you like the Christmas mood? :aww:

Anyway, I will probably not be around a lot during the next weeks. We are having relatives over until New Years, so I won't be on the comp or in #digitalmedia much, during the next week.
I hope you all enjoy your time! Merry Christmas!

Love you all,
Daniel

Hey folks,

on Sunday, December 3rd, we will once again hold our Themed Art Challenges in #DigitalMedia. For more information on how those challenges run, please read my last journal.
As the last time, we will do five rounds, and the prizes will be a One Month Subscription to deviantArt.

And I can tell you that there is a special theme planned, with a special prize. But I never said that :paranoid:

Please note that this time we will start the challenges at 10 am EST / 3 pm GMT, so that people from the European area get a better chance to participate. We will most likely continue to rotate the times, so that no one is excluded from participating because of his time zone.

Sunday, 3rd of December, 10 am EST / 3 pm GMT, #DigitalMedia! I'll see you there!

I had somewhat less time for #DigitalMedia and deviantArt lately, mainly because I have been speedpainting so much. And it feels good to be productive, and those speedpaintings really help me a lot. I hope to learn a lot from doing those. I'll try to drop by in the chat more, though, and I will also try and get back to your comments. At this point I want to take the time and says thanks to gaelic, who left me a whole bunch of very in-depth comments and critiques. I really appreciate that a lot
That said, I hope you're all having a great week, drop me a line here and tell me what's happening in your lifes! :aww:

Love you all,
Daniel

Listen up, people!!

Do you feel like getting creative, like challenging yourself and others at the same time? And of course have a lot of fun? Then you might want to read on:

On Sunday, the 5th of November we will be holding Themed Art Challenges in #DigitalMedia. We will do five rounds, each of them one hour long, in which we will give you a theme that you have  to interpret and visualize. You can do that in any way you want, as long as it can be considered Digital Art.

Within that one hour you have to finish the creation of your piece, which is important especially for 3D artists, who should consider their render time. After that we will give you 15 minutes to submit this piece to deviantArt and note your piece to one of the operators who are leading the challenges. We will then take a few minutes to vote on the winner and announce him, along with the theme for the next hour.
Now while all that is some good fun on its own, we do realise that some of you might need some additional motivation, so we will be awarding the winner of each round with a One Month Subscription for deviantArt.
We will also make a journal on the chat account DMchat which will showcase the top 3 entries of each round!

On a sidenote, we will also allow photography, if you manipulate it beyond what you could do in a darkroom. So there should be something for most artists out there, be it painters, manipulators, 3D artists or otherwise.

We hope to see many of you guys there, we're curious to see your interpretations of the themes, and we're sure it will be a hell lot of fun for everybody!

Remember, Sunday, 5th of November, 3 pm EST - 8 pm EST, #DigitalMedia! We're expecting you there!

Also, starting with this Sunday, we will be holding Themed Art Challenges every first Sunday of a month.
If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a comment or note, I'll be happy to help you out!
And now enough of the babbling, I hope you're all enjoying your weekend!

Love you all,
Daniel
