Life and stuff // Happy New Year!

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 31, 2007, 11:02 AM

Hey lovelies,

no, I am not dead, I just have not been submitting anything in a good while :slow: Doesn't mean that I'm lazy, I was just kept busy with school, a commission and stuff. Oh and of course there were relatives around for Christmas, who I wanted to spend some time with.
I have been painting, though, doing small sketches, concepts, pencil drawings ...and currently I am working on something that started out as a matte painting exercise, as so often, but....is kinda going further now. We will see, if I deem the final result good enough, I might even submit it!
I really have no lack of ideas these days, stuff just kind of pops into my silly mind sometimes, but sadly, I was equipped with two hands only :paranoid:
Anyway, just thought I'd let you people know that I am still there, haha.

However, uni is starting again next week, and so are french classes and nude drawing. I will have to work on a couple of assignments and also shoot a music video, so... I expect that I will have to cut short on painting time again.

But enough babbling from my side. How's everyone doing? What are your wishes for the coming year, what are your plans?

Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and wonderful holidays. Have a Happy New Year, my friends :heart:

Love you all,
Dancakes :heart:

matte painting // critique project - important

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 23, 2007, 1:59 PM

Hey everybody,

it's about time for a new journal again. First of all, thanks for all the kind birthday wishes, it was really lovely to read them all. I had a nice day, the weather was superb, we had family and relatives over (and still do, actually), and I just had a nice time in general.

There are some good news in other regards, too. A few of my paintings are shown on the DVD that comes with the issue 22 of the imagineFX magazine, it should be in stores at the moment.
And also, this week I got an email saying that my matte painting When the earth breaks open will be included in the upcoming d'artiste Matte Painting 2 book by Ballistic Publishing. This came as a real surprise, as the deadline for the entries has been already over two month ago, and I hadn't received an email since then. But I can tell you, I am reaaaally happy about that :D

Sadly though, lately I had almost no time to paint, uni is getting busier once again, with a number of projects running at the same time, and me volunteering for even more :slow:

And now to something different - my critique project. I introduced pretty much every of my critique rounds with an excuse for being too late because I have been busy...and I think I should really draw the consequences from that. I am still very busy, and so are the other members of the critique group, so that's why I decided to put the project on ice for a while now. The last round also got only seven links from people who wanted a critique, and that added to that decision, too.
That does not mean that I won't pick that up again, especially as so far the response to my critiques has been pretty good and I am glad if I was helping people.
Also, I have an idea for another critique project somewhere in the back of my head, let's see if I will substantiate that idea and find the time to do it :nod:

Anyway, I did not want to just cut short on the people who submitted for the last round, so here are my five critiques.

by ~Vloth - the critique

by ~mivva - the critique

by ~mistycat85 - the critique

by ~Maarten-Michiel - the critique

by =Zaichick - the critique

I hope they were useful and helpful, and I also do hope that it won't be too long until I can pick up that project again - if you guys are interested, of course!

I hope you all have a great weekend, tell me what's going on in your lifes :#1:
Love you all,
Daniel :heart:

Themed Art Challenges tomorrow!! - PRIZES

Journal Entry: Sat Aug 4, 2007, 3:17 PM

Hello everyone,

it's the time of the month again: Themed Art Challenges time. By now most of you probably know how they go, but for those of you who are new to them, have a look at this journal to find out about the general procedure.
However, this time there is a difference: We are making two rounds, each two hours long. By doing that we want to give a chance to 3d artists as well, because their genre naturally takes a little longer. Of course, all ye painters, manipulators, designers and any other digital artist can still participate! :ahoy:

Oh and....another difference. This time we're giving out 3 month subscriptions.

So make sure you all come. It's a good challenge and a ton of fun.
#DigitalMedia, 5 pm BST, 12 pm EST. Done readin'? Then spread the word :#1:

Thank you so much, =archanN and ^FallenRox, you guys made my day! :excited:

Thanks a lot to everybody who comments and favourites this piece, I appreciate that a lot! :heart:

Hey people,

okay, round III is finally over. I know this has taken a lot longer than it should, I apologize for having been so slow on that, I have just been busy with other things. This will probably not be the last time that me or someone else in the group is really busy, so that it might be delayed or one of the members will pass for a round. Hope you bear with us though and continue to suggest your images :nod:

So here we go, here are the critiques of this round, I might add more, later.

by ~oO-ShiroNami-Oo - memod's critique

by =wormthingy - memod's critique - cosmosue's critique

by ~ducklin-th - memod's critique - cosmosue's critique

by =Atazure - memod's critique

by ~Iron-Man-429 - memod's critique - cosmosue's critique

by =DeepShadows2 - cosmosue's critique

by =Lalianna-Nyrobi - cosmosue's critique

At this place I not only want to ask you to check out the pieces and leave your thoughts as usual, but I also want to point out to you that =CyanideButterfly felt inspired to do a similar critique project, too, so head over to her Journal and give her some pictures you want critiques, on :nod:
~Dunfisch also decided to write a few critiques on the pictures I selected for the current round, so I will add his critiques to this journal when he sends them to me :nod:

I really enjoy that some people feel inspired to critique themselves, that's exactly what this project is about, and I'd be happy to see the number of people who do that go up. Don't forget, you not only help someone else, but with every critique that you write you also sharpen your own eye, which benefits you with your very own art, too. =)

And now it is time for round IV, please leave me your suggestions again, and don't forget to make sure that they adhere to the conditions which I have described in this journal.

Tomorrow starts the last of two weeks of holidays, then uni starts again, and with that the really busy times. A concept/script needs to be written, a 60 second clip to be cut/edited, possibly some material from a BMX battle, too, and then I will have to film a portrait about someone or something.
I might also soon have no internet for a while. My dad had the clever idea to cancel our internet without getting signed up to a new provider first, and then going off to vacation. I hope I can fix that tomorrow, but if they actually need a signature or something or it doesn't work for any other reasons, then don't expect me only for a while from August 1st on...except for when I'm at uni, perhaps. Fun times.

Last but not last, this thumb that I want to share with you, from an artist who truly deserves more recognition on here :nod:

Whew, if you have actually read until here you have earned yourself my undying love plus a cookie! Now if that's not something!
How are you guys doing?

Love you all,
Daniel :heart:
