It's about time for a new piece. Here we go, this is a matte painting that I had in the works for weeks and weeks. I did not get to work on it for a good while, hence why it took so long.

With this piece I wanted to challenge myself. As you might see in many matte paintings they make heavy use of fog and mist, which, admittedly, can make certain things easier. So I wanted to try if I can create a believable bright day-time piece where you wouldn't have any fog.
And booya, this was a pretty difficult setting, all this foliage almost killed me :faint:

The initial concept has been made as a pencil sketch, then I did a colour sketch in photoshop, refined that and only then I started to use the first photos. Some photos I took myself, all the rest were taken from sxc.hu.

Here is the photo that I incorporated first: [link]
And here is the stock photo for the ship: [link]

Gah, and I tell ya people, extracting a ship and its rigging is NO fun.

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy it, I have submitted it in wallpaper size, so feel free to put it on your desktop. I have also entered this for the Ballistic Publishing d'artiste - Matte Painting 2 book, so wish me luck that they chose it :D

As usual, a print will be up soon.

I can't believe you paint such wonders like this! The amount of detail is stunning and look how beautiful this tropical paradise is! The ship rising up out of the horizon is definately my favorite part, so realistic! Wonderful work and you totally deserve the DD, keep doing your best!

Thank you, Ashley  This was definitely a challenging but fun piece to work on :D I should clarify though, I did use photographic elements in this piece and combined that with painting. One would probably not find most of the photo elements if I showed them the original stock photo, but they certainly were the basis for parts =]
In any case, I'm happy that you like it :aww:

This looks just like a place in Australia, where there was actually a shipwreck many years ago and a couple of people sought shelter in the storm in a cave much like the one you have depicted... It's near Port Campbell on The Great Ocean Road...

That sounds cool :D I'm afraid I haven't seen that before, and a quick google search did not really show much other than a close up of the wreck :hmm: But it must look cool to have a wreck in this awesome coast area...

Well deserved DD ! This is definitely my desktop at the moment, and you kicked butt on this subject !
I think you did very well on the perspective bit, not to mention all the details of the vegetation. You succeeded in painting a bright day-time scene.
What I like best are the effects of the water : the transparency and the reflections on it, plus the realistic diffused clouds in the sky.
This is a fav !

Hussa, thanks a ton for that detailed comment! That's really sweet of you. Getting the level of detail right in that picture was definitely tricky, considering this was supposed to reach a photorealistic level. But I'm glad if it paid off  I sure had fun doing it :D

Thanks again, and also for using it as your desktop background, that's always encouraging to hear :aww:
