Sun, Wind and Sails by memod Sun, Wind and Sails by memod
Nothing big this time, just a speedpainting. I had read a book about awesome painter William Turner, which totally inspired me to play around with colours a bit. I think I spent one hour on it, two maximum.
This isn't exactly recent, but I stumbled over it these days and thought you guys might enjoy it. Sure hope you do

Would that be a book on 'THE' JMW Turner? He's my fave artist by a long shot, I always get so inspired by his paintings, especially in real life down the National Gallery in London, you can't trust the colours in books once you've seen the real thing!

Anyways, nice painting, how long did it take you?
I've recently been having a go at speed painting, if you'd care to take a look.

Have a good'n

Joseph Mallord William Turner, yep  It was an inspiring read, and if I ever get the chance to see his paintings, I certainly will make use of that :D

This speedpainting was done quite a while ago though, I think it was about an hour time.
Glad you like it :D

hehe, yeah. in that case it was a book about the life and the artworks of william turner, and he sure was a master of his craft, he has truly wonderful pieces, and he is just so good with colours :faint:
that's why I wanted to try something with more focus on colours, too

Since this is partially a study of colours, I feel compelled to give you a small tip. You may already know this, or have realised it upon painting this, but there is too much blue in the water (combined with the yellow light, creating an awkward green). It's possible for sunset to exhibit this much blue hue, but when the sun is so low, and the sky is clearly an intense red (as we can see in the upper left) from whence does the blue pigment come? I hope you see my point.

Otherwise, the other colours are awesomely done. I love the jagged cast light on the rocks, the treatment of the tide, the details of the boat, and the intensity and haziness of the sun itself :D

Heya :D Thanks a lot for the critique! I think you are quite right, that in some places there is a little too much blue, for the piece to have a realistic colour scheme. It's been a while since I painted that, I think back then I had been trying to get as many colours into a painting as possible, as often times it is easy to forget variety and get locked down into a more or less monochromatic colour scheme. But yeah, I definitely see your point

Glad you liked it though :D Thank you! :highfive:

I don't think this critique is going to get quite as long as some of my previous ones, but I'll do my best. The first thing I want to mention is that this painting bears a striking resemblance to "Sunday Morning", which is one of the first paintings in your gallery. Is that just a coincidence, or does this draw on that painting at all. I mention is specificallly because of the similar colors and play with light.

As is usually the case for your speedpaintings, it effectively puts any full time painting I've ever even attempted to shame. It could easily be passed as a work that took days, even weeks to complete, simply by the complexity of color and light throughout. In reference to the way that you used light to this picture, you remind me a bit of Georges Seurat in this painting. There is a great deal of his influence, at least as far as I can see, even in the subject matter.

I very much like the texture of this picture, it has almost an oily look to it, or perhaps a pastel feeling. The grainy quality also helps to give it an older, more antique feeling which, although I don't think is usually associated with boating scenes like this, again brings it closer to Seurat's works.

I like the way that the water catches the light, in that aspect it reminds me a lot of Turner's painting "The fighting Temeraire", which exhibits a similar sunset. Your picture seems to conform nicely to the impressionist artstyle. Another painter who this reminds me of is the impressionist Armand Guillaumin.

The only real critique I have of this painting is that I feel that there should be a slightly more defined horizon somewhere in the back of the painting. The water and mountains seem to blend in too quickly into the sky. Other than that, it's fantastic.

I hope that your exams went well!

Hehe, thanks a lot for that! :D And you know, I never thought about it at all - but now that you say it, yes, indeed there is some similarity between sunday morning and this piece, in terms of setting and light, haha.
I don't really think it looks as complex as a piece that took a longer time, but I guess I really ad fun playing with the colours, haha. Turner really inspired me there

You are quite right though about the horizon. It never really occured to me, but yeah, I think some more definition and background would have been nice and given more depth to the piece. I guess when I painted it, it was more about a mood to me, and just getting a bit messy :D

Thanks a lot, and yeah, they all went fine! Now I'm looking for an apartment in Berlin, where studies will continue in december
