...or?

I know, it's hard to believe. Two submissions in one week, I'm setting personal records here!

I have been working on this on and off for quite a while now. To be honest, I'm still not entirely happy with it, but I think I have to call it done. Sometimes working too much on something just leads nowhere. And this bugger has changed a LOT since the initial sketch. Still, I'm overall quite happy and it feels good to finally have realized one of my dozens of ship sketches as a painting. More may follow...

As usual, I'm curious to hear what you think. Print should follow soon. Happy Easter, everyone!

Everything just melts together so nicely! I'm pretty new to digital art and i only do it for fun, but i always fail to make all the parts of the picture seem like they are in the same light and atmosphere. You have really managed to make the smoke stand out but made it melt in at the same time for example. This is beautiful!

Hehe, it was the same for me =] I went home last weekend to see my family. My father's birthday is two days before mine, so we hat a small gathering for us both :D I'm not much of a party person myself, so no huge parties

And you can learn to paint =] Everybody can. It just takes time and determination, that's all. Results do not come overnight

I don't love big parties too... I don't like being in the centre of the attention eheh. And my grandfather's birthdays it the day after mine!

Hmmm, I haven't really looked for tutorials and the likes in ages, so I am not quite sure which sites to recommend off the top of my head...but I would suggest, that you look for books on perspective, colours and light...painting is all about understanding these, and the more you know about them, the better you will paint
I also recommend always keeping a sketchbook with you - and using it :D Capture elements from real life and use that in your paintings

Amazing ! Wundershön. You're capable to keep images to a screenplay in direction to make a movie !
The movies' director work would be easy...

I think its amazing too! I love the name of the ship: Escapist. Maybe it's even better than the actual title. It captures the spirit of the drawing as well as puts an interesting twist to it at the same time.

Hehe yeah, I think escapist is the more interesting word, but I didn't want to make it too obvious by putting it as a title. And it's interesting how few people actually noticed the ship's name :O
I'm definitely glad that you appreciate the twist :aww:

:D I love how you painted the helicopter as well. It's actually what drew my attention to that area of the painting & made me notice the name.

But I get what you mean about being too direct - the title you actually chose suits it well as well. There is just a little hidden message in the painting itself.

I'm not a premium member, so I'll just post my critique as a comment :)
Please keep in mind that this is just my own, personal view, and that I take the right to share it because the artist requested critique.

First of all: A very impressive picture, an immediate eye-catcher! At first, my eyes were drawn to the center area that is framed by the flare, its smoke trail, the middle helicopter, and the guy with the two smoke things. A very dramatic scene - I can almost see the flares fired up, and hear its hissing sound and the distant, but still loud noise from the helicopter in the center. The way the wind carries away the man's smoke-signal, and the glare of the flare are drawn brilliantly.

On the second look, I noticed some details that contribute to the first impression, even though they might not be noticed consciously at first: The birds that seem to be startled and surprised by the sudden noise, which contribute to the dynamic feel of the pic, and the second flare in the background, that adds to the impression that those people are doing everything to avoid being overlooked.

The elaborate construction alongside the ship and the rather big makeshift huts illustrate that these people have had to arrange themselves in this place, and, also in combination with the title, that they must have been waiting for their rescue a very long time.

The name of the ship, "Escapist", made me wonder if this is just some irony or whether there is a longer story behind this ship's (last) journey...

Referring to some previous comments: I can very well imagine how this ship might have lost its engine or steering in a storm and was pushed against these shallows. And I take the red/orange-and-white coloring of the helicopter on the left as an indication that these are indeed rescue helicopters.

However, in my personal view, the helicopters' arrival might be a tick too... hm... dynamic or acrobatic or so. The way they storm into the scene at low level reminds me of, hm, maybe a landing of some special armed forces or so. In my own imagination of "being rescued/found at last", I see a single helicopter in the distance that approaches at an agonizingly slow speed or something like that, if you catch my drift.

But, to counter my own small objection: I have no idea what my point would do to the picture, since it is very well composed as it is now. The heliopters are brilliantly placed and lighted, and the picture would probably miss something, if the dark helicopter would not frame it on the top right, and if the white one would not provide a highlight in the otherwise dark left side.

The technique is just amazing. What a range! The fragile constructions and details on land and on the ship, the people's poses, the mentioned flare-trails and the blown away smoke, the sharp lines and the bare, weather-beaten hull of the huge ship, the misty mountains in the back and the clouds and the sky that change from dark and bleak (I hope that's the correct word) in the left to bright, hopeful and promising in the right.

It's great that you are able to create a strong first impression, and at the same time include so many accurate details that one can look at the picture many times and it never gets boring!

:highfive:
