Recently I saw this beautiful photo by *newcastlemale which I really liked and which immediately made me want to paint a similar scene. Hey I don't know how close it is in the end, but at least the fortress looks alike :D
Big thanks to Graeme for being cool with me using his work as a reference and for making awesome photos! Go check him out =]

I tried creating the whole image by using the lasso technique here, which is a bit of a first for me. Was good fun though and I'll definitely use it again.

Anyways, hope you guys enjoy it! As always, I am keen to hear what you think.

There is so much movement going on in this painting, and I can almot hear the seagulls, shrieking and splashing the water as they dive. All the action here makes the painting slightly restles, something one has to look at for a good while to catch everything that's going on. That adds to the originality and especially impact.

Colors here are dark, yet work well together. The front looks cold and desolate, I keep thinking there's oil on the rocks. The dark cloud above emphasizes the feeling of an incoming storm. It's a nice contrast to the fortres, bathing in sunlight, as if it was a safe haven for the boats in the distance. The seagulls are especially well painted, I like the contrast in them, and how easily they can be recognized as birds, even if they actually are just white spots.

Compared to the original photo, this is definitely more threatening and dynamic. I'd like to know which do you think follows this moment depicted in the painting: a storm unlike ever seen, or sunlight and peace?

Wow. I didn't even notice there was a man in it. I was distracted by the rest of the piece and how good it is.

Hehe yeah he isn't too apparent at first sight, or at least I hope so :D But I felt it'd be a good touch =]

It was definitely a great touch! I like how there's so many interesting things to notice in this piece with the warm spots of lighting leading your eye to places and the movement of the splashing water. Finding him in the middle was sort of like discovering there's one more cookie at the bottom of the cookie jar. haha. I like those kind of surprises.

Also, the movement of the birds flying captures your eye's focus.

Most of the time I try to stay away from paintings. Honestly, they scare me(definately not my fortee). But this is amazing. I really don't know how people can live through the stress of making these kinds of things. If I tried, the whole time I'd be looking over my shoulder and saying... "What if I mess up? Will I have to start all over?" Then I'd get afraid and abandon the project. (I know, pathetic.) But that's just how I am. I prefer a pencil and photoshop to any other creative tools in the world.

Well I did this in photoshop =] So I could always paint on top, if I made a mistake. There is no need to worry. Mistakes are part of the journey, you should not avoid painting just because you are afraid of them =]
And even though we are never really satisfied with our work, it -is- actually quite fun to do =] You just have to loosen up :D
